For centuries, Portugal was one of the biggest and best tiling suppliers for Europe. Some of the most recognized are hand painted ceramic tiles. Many workers were engaged in this art and the best known brand was “Viúva Lamego” in Lisbon, which lasted until the early XX century.
The art of tiling is still present although only active in some small units with a few workers and artists.
It was traditionally used in construction and even nowadays you can find amazing building façades– ancient palaces and manor houses – with a special emphasis on the churches, especially in the most important cities like PORTO and LISBOA.
The Portuguese heritage authorities have undertaken a remarkable job in the recovery of many examples, both inside and outside the buildings.
And you can appreciate many expressions of the best tiling all over the country.
