Walking along the valleys of rivers Minho and Lima you will find romanesque religious sites from the XIII century. Along the Cistercian routes, many of them between lush green mountains, there are medieval villages, castles and traditional monasteries many of which are classified as national monuments. This is where Portugal began.
From North to South.
A place always in touch with nature, with rich gastronomy – autochtonous meat, fish from the river and desserts made in convents – and a unique wine that is still produced: the green wine.
This wine is both fresh and light, with little alcohol content, made from regional vine varieties (DOC) – Alvarinho, Arinto, Vinhão and Espadeiro – and is harvested with the help of ladders to climb to the vines. It is definitely worth appreciating in the many farms along the way.
In Alto Minho you will also find manor houses here and there: they have been a presence for centuries and yet the surrounding landscape makes you forget about human presence.
