Basketry is one of the traditional Portuguese handicraft branches most associated with the areas of manufacture. Nowadays this technique is manly for decorative purposes.
According to the region where they are created, its materials can differ: wicker, rye straw, reeds and rush.
In Penafiel (Porto district) there are quality Portuguese products such as the wooden baskets that are used in grape harvesting or the painted ‘açafates’ made from rods and used in traditional celebrations.
