Before beaches became famous for bathing, the thermal spas were the main protagonists. But let’s go back in time and explain you better their history: during the roman presence in the territory we now call Portugal, there were already thermal spaces such as S. Pedro do Sul and Chaves (Aquae Flaviae).
Later on, thinking about the welfare of the people, Queen D. Leonor orders the construction of a thermal hospital in Caldas da Rainha. However it was in the XIX century that the thermal spas had a bigger protagonism mainly next to the high classes who enjoyed those well-being spaces where they could meet other people. After the II World War, national traditions began to change and the beach, a space used mainly by fishermen, started being an ideal space for bathers. This was the time when Algarve started having protagonism as a touristic destination.
However, this didn’t mean the end of the thermal spas. Their proven benefits in what concerns well-being and health ensure that people come back once and again to a space where they can escape the daily confusion.
