The Portuguese carnival is a national celebration and it changes from year to year according to the calendar of the Roman Catholic Church.
Even though some cities have their specific carnivals, there is a common theme across all of them: sociopolitical humour.
The most famous “carnivals” are: Estarreja, Elvas, Figueira da Foz, Lazarim, Loulé, Mealhada, Ovar, Sesimbra, Tavira, Torres Vedras and Madeira, where these celebrations are especially important to attract tourists.
Carnival celebrations have been with us for at least 400 years. And do you know who took this celebration to Brazil? Yes, we did.
